FOREWORD FROM THE MEC
The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is immensely proud of the massive extravaganza that the MACUFE Festival has become over the years. This year marks the 20th anniversary of MACUFE and the Department seeks to involve the general public in its conceptualisation and staging, thus incorporating a variety of ideas and concepts from our people. We invite the public to make suggestions by means of the department’s social media platforms and through suggestion boxes made available in all the libraries across the province. The socio-economic impact assessment conducted by the Centre for Development Support of the University of the Free State in 2015 leaves no doubt that the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE) is an important tool in boosting the local economy in Mangaung. If one includes expenditure by locals, a total of R150 million is spent by those attending MACUFE. The festival attracts approximately 18 000 visitors from outside Mangaung to the city and this assessment highlights the great achievement of this provincial flagship programme. We are delighted of this event for the reason that MACUFE Festival serves as an important platform to showcase our Province to the rest of the world. Moreover, we are also excited that our festival fanatics in the province are going to be presented with yet another brilliant festival as usual.
Indeed this event has successfully managed to add flair to the weeklong annual MACUFE festivities.
