2017 MANGAUNG AFRICAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL

“Re Ya Tshola”

20th Anniversary Milestone:

The Mangang African Cultural Festival (MACUFE), one of the most popular cultural festival on the African continent and beyond, is celebrating a historical landmark of 20 years of existence in October 2017! This festival has from humble beginnings grown from strength to strength and has undoubtedly reached international stature. Over the 20 years of its existence the festival can pride itself of the following milestones, amongst others:

  • Contribution to the tourism and economic growth of Mangaung Metro Municipality borne out by economic impact studies conducted by the University of the Free State. (According to the study conducted by the University of the Free State for 2015 MACUFE, “the Provincial Government spends approximately R46 million per annul on MACUFE. In return, MACUFE generates approximately R94 million in visitor’s expenditure in Bloemfontein. If one includes expenditure by locals, a total of R124 million is spent by those attending MACUFE”. The festival attracts approximately 180 000 visitors to the City of Mangaung.)
  • Growth in the number of patrons who have constantly filled the different venues of the festival to capacity.
  • Attracting international, national and local artists of high caliber to the delight of patrons.
  • Attracting sponsorship from reputable private sector companies such as Vodacom, Standard Bank, MTN, National Lottery and several others.
  • Growth in the participation of local (Free State) artists in the various programme of the festival.
  • Contributing towards the promotion of social cohesion and nation building.
  • Empowerment and promotion of Small Medium and Macro Enterprises (SMMEs).

2017 Edition:

As in previous editions the 2017 edition of MACUFE promises to dazzle its patrons with an action packed and entertainment galore programme.  Guided by its pay-off-line, “When Your Heart and Soul is African” and the 2017 theme, “Re Ya Tshola”, the 2017 MACUFE edition will be rolled out from the 29 September to 08 October 2017.

As part of this historical milestone the 2017 MACUFE is being staged during the celebration of the Centenary of the stalwart of the liberation struggle, Mr Oliver Reginald Manyane Tambo. 2017 has been declared by Government as the Year of O.R Tambo. MACUFE 2017 will therefore also be used as a fitting tribute to this stalwart.

Artists

International artists of note will continue to feature as part of the programme. For the 2017 edition, music lovers can expect to be enthralled by the likes of Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Davido (Nigeria), Gemini Major (Malawi), Sands (Swaziland), Bhudaza (Lesotho), and Jah Prayzah (Zimbabwe) among others. These music maestros will perform alongside our own South African music maestros who will equally keep MACUFE patrons entertained; they include Nasty C, DJ Speedsta, Thandiswa Mazwai, Amanda Black, Ringo, Sipho Mabuse, Busiswa, and Tshepo Tshola among others.

Several Free State hit-makers have also been included in the line-up of artists such as Prince Kaybee, MC Fire, Castino, Shaxe, Semito, Nonkosi, Sello Malete, Teboho, Morwesi, Tsusie Ntseto, Serame Sediti, DJ Finzo, and Biki Mafabatho among others. For the nourishment and revival of the spirit MACUFE Gospel lovers can expect many of their favorite artists to grace the event. These include Dr. Tumi, Keke Phoofolo, Neyi Zimu, Sipho Ngwenya, Thina Zungu, Malibongwe Gqwabe, and Primrose among others. Back by popular demand is the MACUFE Comedy which promises to keep its patrons in laughter through comics such as David Kau, Tumi Morake, Rasta, Tieho Khakhau, Skhumba, Summary, Salesman, Donovan Goliath, and Elton Mduduzi Ntuli among others.

Programme

The MACUFE programme has always been appealing to a wide range of audiences with diverse music tastes. The 2017 edition will continue to entrench this appeal to all lovers of music and the arts in general. Tickets are available at Computicket and the programme will unfold as follows:

  • Friday, 29 September: Tshepe vs. Trap Hip Hop show will be staged at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground from 18h00 to 02h00. Entrance fee is R100.
  • Friday, 29 September: Macufe Art of Sound will be staged at Free

State Stadium from 13h00 till late. Entrance fee is R120

  • Saturday, 30 September: Miss Glamorous Free State will be staged at the Bloemfontein Showground, Protea Hall from 18h00 to 02h00. Entrance fee is R110.
  • Sunday, 01 October: MACUFE Gospel show will be staged at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground from 09h00 to 23h00. Entrance fee is R170.
  • Monday, 02 October – Saturday, 07 October: The Arts and Craft Market will be operational at 35 Markgraaff St, Westdene, Mangaung. Entrance is free of charge.
  • Wednesday, 04 October – Friday, 06 October:  MACUFE Theatre will be staged at the Civic Theatre and PACOFS.
  • Wednesday, 04 October: MACUFE Comedy Show will be staged at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground from 18h30 till 00h00. Entrance fee is R190.
  • Thursday, 05 October: MACUFE Indoor Jazz will be staged at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground from 18h30 till 00h00. Entrance fee is R240.
  • Friday, 06 October: MACUFE Divas will be staged at The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground from 18h30 till 00h00. Entrance fee is R240.
  • Friday, 06 October: MACUFE Urban Youth Festival will be staged at Mahungra Carwash from 16:00 till late. Entrance fee is R170.00
  • Saturday, 07 October: MACUFE Main Festival will be staged at Rose Garden, Loch Logan from 11h00 till late. Entrance fee is R350.
  • Sunday, 08 October: Sparta MACUFE Cup will be staged at the Free State Stadium. Gates open at 11h00. Entrance Fee is R60 for Grand Stand and R50 for Open Stand. Juveniles will pay R30.

MACUFE Homebrew

MACUFE Homebrew programme serves as a developmental component of the festival. In this component the best of the best of local artists are provided a platform to showcase their talent and to benefit from the festival.

The 2017 MACUFE Homebrew programme will unfold as follows:

  • Saturday, 30 Sept: MACUFE Carnival (From Maphikela House and Twin City to Clive Solomon stadium); 09:00 – 19:00
  • Monday to Saturday, 02 – 07 Oct: MACUFE Arts and Craft Market – crafts, visual arts, children’s village etc. (Markgraaf Street); 09:00 – 19:00
  • Monday to Saturday, 02 – 07 Oct: MACUFE Theatre – featuring Moneymaker, Poetry Cries, Mantsho and Paleho (PACOFS and Civic Theatre):
  • Monday to Saturday, 02 – 07 Oct: MACUFE Poetry – featuring Singing for Oliver production dedicated to Mr Oliver Tambo (PACOFS):

 

Security: Prohibited Items and Activities

The patrons of MACUFE are cordially requested to take note of the following rules when attending the festival particularly on the venues within the MACUFE Precinct:

  1. At The Dome, Old Grey Sports Ground: NO cooler boxes/bags, camping chairs, braai stands, umbrellas/patio, breakable bottles, firearms or dangerous weapons will be allowed.
  2. At the Rose Garden: NO tents, braai stands, umbrellas/patio, breakable glasses, firearms or dangerous weapons will be allowed.
  3. At the Free State Stadium: NO tents, braai stands, umbrellas/patio, breakable glasses, liquor, firearms or dangerous weapons will be allowed.
  4. At the Bloemfontein Showground: NO tents, braai stands, umbrellas/patio, breakable glasses, liquor, firearms or dangerous weapons will be allowed.
  5. NO PASS-OUT in all MACUFE activities except where admission is free.
  6. NB: All children pay for admission at a cost similar to adults except where admission is free.

MACUFE patrons are assured high level security management at all MACUFE activities. However, it remains the primary responsibility of each patron to ensure maximum personal security at all material times.
