This year’s Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE) will be one of the most important events of national and international magnitude to be held by the Free State Province. The preparations for hosting this dazzling event started twelve years ago and I make a bold statement to say, we have passed with flying colours since its inception in 1997 - and this year we will continue to raise the bar.
It is evident that the Free State Province is capable of hosting world class events. An example of this is when the Province hosted the Confederations Cup competition earlier this year, clearly demonstrating to the world that the Free State Province as a brand, is a market leader of note. As peace loving people of the Free State, the world attested to our trademark hospitality, superb infrastructure and organizational abilities.
Your presence today further endorses that MACUFE is a cultural fest of international stature.
As MACUFE forms part of Tourism Month, we hope you will enjoy the festival with a freer state of mind.
I would remind you that we are a jewel in wide–spread eco-tourism boasting the big five. We pride ourselves with the Basotho Cultural Village in Thabo Mofutsanyane, the Vredefort Dome in Vredfort – an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, sky-gliding in Xhariep, and sport-tourism at Phakisa in Lejweleputswa as well as having a rich documented cultural history.
We are the home of the soccer brands; Bloemfontein Celtic ‘Siwelele sa Masele’ and Free State Stars ‘Ya Lla Koto’ who, through their fervent supporters, also contribute immensely in the enhancement of our tourism market and local economies throughout the year, as they oblige their PSL fixtures.
I hope to see you all in the 2010 World Cup matches in Mangaung. Please go back and sell the Free State your destination of choice!
On behalf of the Free State Executive Council, I heartily welcome you all to this year’s MACUFE. Enjoy your stay in Mangaung.
